    DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
    Sigfrido “Sigi” Pineda:
Born in Taxco, Mexico in 1929, Sigi began his apprenticeship with Los Castillo at age 12, became a Maestro silversmith at 15, and created some of the most desirable pieces ever produced there. When he was 19, he went to work at Margot de Taxco’s taller where he pioneered the enameling process which became synonymous with her name.
In 1952, Sigi opened his own workshop, Plateros (later renamed Sigi), where he incorporated a more international flavor to his work than his contemporaries and predecessors who were exploring symbolic Mexican themes. Sigi’s version of organic modernism was inspirational in developing and establishing a new design sensibility in Taxco and became known as, “The Sigi Style.” Talent must run in the family – his cousin was the world renowned Antonio Pineda (d.2009). Sigi, who was one of the last silver artisans from the “golden age” of Taxco, died in 2018 at age 89 and his love of designing jewelry continued until the very end.
